San Francisco Open Named Qualifying Event for AAU Junior Olympics
Author - L..LaGassa
Mar 05, 2003
San Francisco, CA -- March 5, 2003 -- The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)has named the San Francisco Open Dancesport Championships a qualifying
event for the 2003 Junior Olympics. Youth, Junior, and Pre-Teen couples who join the AAU and dance in the San Francisco Open will automatically
qualify to compete in the Junior Olympic Games. The 2003 Games will be held July 22 through August 2 in Detroit, MI.

The AAU started the Junior Olympic Games in 1967 with just two sports and 523 participating athletes. Since then it has grown to over two
dozen sports and over 13,000 athletes, making it the largest annual youth multi-sport festival in the United States. Dancesport joined the program in 2002, with Standard Ballroom, Latin-American, and Salsa events. Many exciting sports stars of today have participated in past Junior Olympics, including Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Shaquille O'Neil, and Evander Holyfield.

The San Francisco Open Dancesport Championships were first held in 1981.
The 2003 edition will run April 18th through 20th, and features a full program of Youth, Collegiate, Amateur, Pro/Am and Professional events.
